Hot in anticipation for the return of Mad Men, I invited a few retro-licious friends over to watch the season five premiere. We gathered around my TV clutching our Bloody Mary cocktails, oohing, ahhing and salivating over Don Draper. And sometimes we were silent, taking it all in. The re-cap after the show is almost as good as the show. Almost!
In true Mad Men tradition, I set up a bar. Partly to style it up and partly for ease and handiness. They really knew how to roll in the ’60s. This Bloody Mary recipe packs a tangy punch and it’s equally good without the vodka. But if you’re doing it up for Mad Men, vodka is highly recommended. And so are pretty garnishes. A perfect meal in a glass. -bvox
The Shiny Tomato Bloody Mary
Inspired by Bon Appetit
- 4 cups tomato juice
- 1 cup dill pickle juice
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Sriracha hot sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups vodka
- 8 celery stalks
- 8 lemon wedges
- 16 pimento-stuffed green olives
Combine first nine ingredients in a large pitcher and chill overnight. Add vodka to pitcher; stir well. Fill glasses with ice. Divide Bloody Mary cocktail among glasses. Garnish each with a celery stalk and skewered lemon wedges and olives.
Goes down well with the great company of friends.
